While the month of June marks the transition from spring to summer, it is also Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. Recently, the White House released a proclamation credited to and signed by President Barack Obama.
Within the body of the proclamation, the President acknowledged the dedication of advocates who fight for the rights of the LGBT community. According to the proclamation, these efforts have contributed toward making our society more inclusive.
The President also cited the significance of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states. He states that the landmark decision affirmed the idea that everyone is freer when we all receive equal treatment.
The advent of LGBT Pride Month and the legalization of same-sex marriage are positives for a large number of Americans. Ultimately, the consequences of these steps forward are also deeply significant on a much smaller, more personal level.
For instance, while getting married and starting a family is a normal and common thing to do, it had been made unfairly complicated or even impossible for many same-sex couples. Thanks to the efforts of LGBT activists and their supporters, this is no longer the case.
However, with rights come responsibilities. When a married decides to divorce, they may have issues of child custody and child support to work out. In such cases, both parties have an obligation to settle matters in a manner that is in their children’s best interests.
An experienced family law attorney can guide and advise individuals who are looking to make sure that their final divorce settlement is fair and fulfills their children’s needs.
